So, after collecting my thoughts together, I con 1 CONC sented in my humble way and with what time I have at my disposal a 1 CONC nd so it came to pass that I, Lazarus Beckenham, youngest of the fami 1 CONC ly of five was born at the village of West Hagbourne, Berks on the 10th No 1 CONC vember 1835. My parents, Joseph and Mary - farm people - having both di 1 CONC ed on or about the year 1845 consequently I, with my brother Richard, we 1 CONC re placed in the Orphanage near Wallingford. 1 CONT My days at that Institution till the age of 13 I remember to have been da 1 CONC ys of happy memory. Kind schoolmaster, Mr William Glendenning, birds, flow 1 CONC er-beds, rambles, bathing, picnics - which were called "going-a-gipsyin 1 CONC g" - and pleasures too numerous to mention, for to jot down all and everyt 1 CONC hing would occupy more time and space than is my present purpose. Whi 1 CONC le at the Institution I have become a general favourite and had the prefer 1 CONC ment to act as Assistant Porter, then, a little later on was entrust 1 CONC ed as Letter Carrier to the Village of Little Wittenham, 2 miles with simp 1 CONC ly letters etc., from the Master's office. At the age of 14 the Maste 1 CONC r, Mr Palmer, obtained for me my first situation as Assistant at an Inn, t 1 CONC he King's Head & Bell, Abingdon. Time went on when, at the age of 14 yea 1 CONC rs and 6 months, I found my way back to my birthplace, Hagbourne, whe 1 CONC re I got taken on to gather fruit, he - Mr Napper - year by year employ 1 CONC ed many, both women and men, in the season; contracting for all fruit in t 1 CONC he orchards throughout the district. My first attempt to set the ladd 1 CONC er to a cherry tree and mounting to where the luscious bunches were, wh 1 CONC en down came the ladder and me with it! a bit winded, of course, one of t 1 CONC he men was soon with me and set me right again. 1 CONT At the end of the season my next turn was to mind lambs on the Downs, whi 1 CONC ch was a pleasant occupation to go on with. By the way, I remember one Sun 1 CONC day morning - it was warm and so laid down and went to sleep and was awake 1 CONC ned to find another lot of lambs had got mixed with mine. 1 CONT In the early part of 1853 I began to think of another change in my youthf 1 CONC ul career and while in a Tap room in Abingdon I fell into conversation wi 1 CONC th a young man who had already joined the Berkshire Militia; his speech w 1 CONC as fair and affable and interesting, and at all this I felt captivated, a 1 CONC nd so after a while he took me to the Recruiting Officer's office, when wi 1 CONC th my consent I was enrolled into the same has himself viz The Royal Berks 1 CONC hire Militia at the age of 17. The time therefore arrived, and in print 1 CONC ed circular from the War Office to say that my attendance at the Forba 1 CONC ry in Reading on a certain date is requested, for 28 days training a 1 CONC nd to which I obeyed. I was billeted with others at Public Houses, Yes, a 1 CONC nd how proud I felt at being togged up in the old swallow-tailed coat! a 1 CONC nd yet how little I knew of what the first step in military life really me 1 CONC ant. 1 CONT At this point how I remember strolling along the main street with a comra 1 CONC de that very same evening - meeting the Adjutant and as I saluted he call 1 CONC ed out "wrong hand!" I often think of it. 1 CONT At the calling up of the Militia the second time for another 28 days train 1 CONC ing, I fell in conversation with a Recruiting Sergeant of the 9th Regimen 1 CONC t, whose smart appearance seemed even more tempting than the Militia, a 1 CONC nd without hesitation decided to have a constant job and so asked the Serg 1 CONC eant if he would have me into Her Majesty's Service. To this - he to 1 CONC ok me into a pub,. measured me and gave me The Queen's Shilling - 10 May 1 1 CONC 854 - for Her Majesty's 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers and how excited and pro 1 CONC ud I was as I entered a shop to buy some ribbons to decorate my cap, as w 1 CONC as customary in those times, until the three following days when with a f 1 CONC ew others (for recruiting was going on pretty brisk) were taken by tra 1 CONC in to the Depot at Winchester. 1 CONT At the Doctor's examination the Head Surgeon said I was slender and didn 1 CONC 't know if I could carry the knapsack, but he would pass me and so after b 1 CONC eing sworn in the next day I was served out with regimentals including kna 1 CONC psack and kit, pouch and crossbelts and schakoo - but without musket for t 1 CONC he time, as raw recruits had to be drilled in squads by qualified non-com 1 CONC s: till in a few weeks and becoming eligible to join the company to whi 1 CONC ch we were told off and then we were served out with the old musket - or b 1 CONC rown bess, as it was then called (presumably the immediate successor to t 1 CONC he flint firelock). 1 CONT At this very time - and little did I understand - the fact of the Regime 1 CONC nt in which I had enlisted, was actually then at the front - the seat of W 1 CONC ar. Time goes on and by the way I will here call to mind the interesting o 1 CONC ccasion of my being selected to act in the Guard of Honour to Her Most Gra 1 CONC cious Majesty Queen Victoria on and at the time of the foundation stone la 1 CONC ying at Netley Hospital. And about three months later orders were coming f 1 CONC rom the War Office for reinforcements to join the army in the Crimea a 1 CONC nd at this my eyes began to open and to realise that something was going o 1 CONC n. 1 CONT A soldier's life to be under military law is something other than theory a 1 CONC nd hearing read over to us on parade for the first time Extracts from t 1 CONC he Articles of War I found the first was "Obedience is the first duty of t 1 CONC he Soldier". Then as to desertion, striking a superior office, mutiny, fo 1 CONC und asleep at his post, cowardice in presence of an enemy, creating fal 1 CONC se alarms, betraying the Watchword etc. any one of which by Court Marti 1 CONC al meant either flogging (three of which I have witnessed), dismissal, sol 1 CONC itary confinement or otherwise. 1 CONT In looking back to my Winchester days - one way of showing obedience w 1 CONC as at a Lt. General's inspection just previous to the first batch for t 1 CONC he Crimea, when every man must be present, except those actually on duty. 1 CONT The Battalion is in open column, then the word is given to "form line on N 1 CONC o. 1". Meanwhile the Orderly Room Clerk, not knowing what to do, when t 1 CONC he Inspecting Officer noticing him called out "What's that Sergt. Doing? W 1 CONC ho made you Sergeant?" "Go home, sir" and Sergt. Dixon, for that was his n 1 CONC ame, took the Officer at his word, left the parade ground, went to the Bar 1 CONC rack room, divested himself of his musket and belts and went home, a 1 CONC nd so far as I know never came back. It should be mentioned here that sold 1 CONC iers employed in office work and the like, Hospital sergeants etc. have n 1 CONC ot the same chance of drills and inspections as those who are at it regula 1 CONC rly. 1 CONT The first batch was 200, but barely fit for active service and under comma 1 CONC nd of Capt. Herbert and two Lieutenants. A little later on a second instal 1 CONC ment, till it came to my turn as a third reinforcement and early in Februa 1 CONC ry the following year I found myself leaving Winchester for Portsmouth whe 1 CONC re we embarked on board the steam ship Croesus bound for the seat of w 1 CONC ar in fact the startling orders for the British Army to proceed to the Ea 1 CONC st shook the heart of peaceful England to its centre, partings and "good l 1 CONC uck" were exchanged such as had not been known in this country since the d 1 CONC ays of the immortal Nelson and Wellington. 1 CONT I well remember passing through the chopping seas of the Channel and the B 1 CONC ay of Biscay and how I felt something like the Boy one has heard tell of g 1 CONC oing on his first voyage asked the Captain to stop the ship and he would g 1 CONC et out and walk! After a brief stay at Malta, we renewed our voyage on t 1 CONC he steamer Alma, calling at Constantinople and thence to Balaklava - our d 1 CONC estination. Landing at that place, the first salute we heard on passi 1 CONC ng a small building and which sent a shiver-like sensation thro me. "Hall 1 CONC o! more soldiers arrived for the slaughter!" Then the five miles mar 1 CONC ch to the general encampment. Away to the left the French Army. On my rig 1 CONC ht the British, the glorious red coats, whose appearance on the Battlefiel 1 CONC ds of Europe have invariably been the precedence of triumph, but the sig 1 CONC ht of all the united forces in varied uniforms formed a picturesque and im 1 CONC posing sight not soon forgotten, and better imagined than described. But h 1 CONC ere I must pause as it is not my purpose to go into detail and recit 1 CONC al of all and everything of that memorable campaign, and which stands on r 1 CONC ecord as a matter of history, except that I mention simply that on reporti 1 CONC ng my arrival to the Lt Colonel Bunbury at the Orderly Office tent I was c 1 CONC omplimented and told I was the youngest sergeant they had and so, aft 1 CONC er a word of encouragement, I saluted and went to my tent. No. 8 Compa 1 CONC ny so far, so good. 1 CONT How well I can call to mind my first Guard Duty, with 5 men and a Lance Co 1 CONC rporal, the tent was not many yards from a pond, where the horses as we 1 CONC ll as the men obtained water from. At a late hour at night the visiting Of 1 CONC ficer was going his rounds, finds us more asleep than on watch. The Sent 1 CONC ry called, after challenging, "Guard turned out", aye lucky there was no-o 1 CONC ne to get a snap-shop of us, what a sketch he would have to show his frien 1 CONC ds at Home! Out rushes myself with some others forage cap, another witho 1 CONC ut one, while a third without his rifle, but what can be expected from you 1 CONC ng inexperienced half trained recruits. Of course the visiting Officer, af 1 CONC ter inspecting us to see if we were all sober, told us to think of our res 1 CONC ponsibility and to be more alert in future. 1 CONT My next little bit was my first 24 hours in the trenches - a quarter mi 1 CONC le from Camp on either side of the ravine, covered with brushwood. On t 1 CONC he way vestiges of war seen in all directions and no sooner had I got to o 1 CONC ur appointed places than something fell like a cannon shot and burst li 1 CONC ke a thunder-bolt. While in a moment how terrified I became at the bursti 1 CONC ng of a shell overhead and realised it was no use trying to escape the fal 1 CONC ling fragements and so endeavoured to steel myself to the stern reali 1 CONC ty of my position with trying to sing to the tune of "Let me like a solid 1 CONC er fall" at the same time I can remember how I clutched with might and ma 1 CONC in to one of the sandbags with trembling "Oh! where am I" while in this po 1 CONC sition whiz came a 14 pounder from a Russian redoubt, which was a fatal o 1 CONC ne for Corporal Shave, a few yards from me and at this I felt stagger 1 CONC ed - and then swish came a shower of grape and cannister shot. 1 CONT I should here say this same N.C. Officer had previous to this been at t 1 CONC he Battle of the Alma, was wounded, invalided Home, actually volunteer 1 CONC ed to go out again and by the way went to the Crimea on the same steam 1 CONC er as myself. And what with the flash of musketry, the exchange of rifle s 1 CONC hot and the exchange from Russian batteries with our siege guns, often sca 1 CONC rcely seeing each other, except by the fitful gleams of the moon. All w 1 CONC as kept up day and night, quite a concert. 1 CONT The Crimea! It is not possible to describe the sufferings of our Count 1 CONC ry in the persons of her sons, in those dearly bought victories. 1 CONT Battles won by men worn down by hunger bore terrible witness to the quench 1 CONC less nature of British courage - when the honour of Britain is at stake. 1 CONT Of course it is not my purpose to go further into all the happenings of th 1 CONC at prolonged 18 months Campaign more than to say having been down with fev 1 CONC er, was forwarded on to Scutari Hospital, where that Angel of Mercy Miss N 1 CONC ightingale was. Afterwards, and all fit for duty again, till the fall of S 1 CONC ebastopol 8 September and quite content to return to the old country aga 1 CONC in with the Regiment early in 1856. I must now relate how delighted I w 1 CONC as on obtaining six weeks furlough and to visit my relatives at my dear o 1 CONC ld birthplace, fraught with the pleasing remembrances of the past. 1 CONT Of course the old thatched house with little flower garden at the back h 1 CONC ad gone! Ah, truly I might have exclaimed "Never again shall I pluck the f 1 CONC lowers, that grew around my childhood's happy home. 1 CONT My next visit was to Wallingford a distance of five miles - the pla 1 CONC ce of my schooldays, times of most happy memory. 1 CONT I come now to being stationed at North Camp Aldershot in the expectati 1 CONC on of a quiet and peaceable time - but in the short space of 12 mont 1 CONC hs my Regiment with some others embarked for India in three separate ship 1 CONC s, on account of the great Indian Sepoy Rebellion of 1857 - and with Headq 1 CONC uarters of the Royal Welsh on board the three decker sailing ship Melville 1 CONC . 1 CONT After a voyage of 105 days landed at Calcutta. Everybody - sick, lame a 1 CONC nd lazy - in feverish excitement "O the sea, the sea, The wide and open se 1 CONC a!" Nowhere does the history of the world record such a widespread rebelli 1 CONC on as that of 1857 which scarcely any single power could have crushed, b 1 CONC ut that which, led by its brave Generals was enabled by Divine guidan 1 CONC ce to overthrow the murderous conspiracies of the Indian Chiefs. 1 CONT The first sight of India had little to please or interest- the coast seem 1 CONC ed remarkably flat, and the shore only discernible by tall coconut trees s 1 CONC urrounding the villages. 1 CONT As our presence was urgently in demand up country I had no chance to vis 1 CONC it the city and early next morning we were on a force march to Cawnpore. 1 CONT The wicked deeds which had taken place there and elsewhere of course are f 1 CONC ully recorded in history. Then, as to Lucknow, the name associated with ga 1 CONC llant and heroic deeds - including the seige and "Relief" under those gre 1 CONC at and valiant soldiers Havelock, Colin Campbell and others and finishi 1 CONC ng up with the final fall of Lucknow, of which I had taken some part in a 1 CONC nd that little bit was the taking by storm of the King of Oudh's palace a 1 CONC nd gardens. Viz. the Kaiser Baugh and remained there 2 months. 1 CONT To all this it is only necessary to add that the terrible Sepoy Mutiny bei 1 CONC ng now over the Government of India was transferred to the British Crown a 1 CONC nd Royal Proclamation declared British India, with its population of two h 1 CONC undred and fifty millions an integral part of the British Empire. A 1 CONC nd it is to be hoped that the closing scenes of 1857, the horrors of whi 1 CONC ch have passed away like some hideous and fearful dream, be an experien 1 CONC ce never to be repeated. 1 CONT Before closing this part of my history, if I may say that with all the cam 1 CONC paigns and force marches under a tropical sun I had spent some happy tim 1 CONC es in that eastern land. While stationed at Newabgunge one of the beautif 1 CONC ul sights was that of the Great Comet of 1858 and which was viewedin all i 1 CONC ts splendour for about twenty-one nights called "Donatis" which will not a 1 CONC ppear again for some hundred years.. Also I visited that beautiful mausole 1 CONC um at Aggra, the Taj - twice. 1 CONT And like everything else my service in the Army, tidy and trim, with its c 1 CONC hances and opportunities in cloud and sunshine, storm and calm, ca 1 CONC me to an end and after a period of eight years - making in all 11 years se 1 CONC rvice - I find myself home again at Walmer (the Regimental Depot) whe 1 CONC re I received my Discharge, the parchment bearing the usual signatures inc 1 CONC luding of course the Commanding Officer Lt. Col S Wells CB giving me an ex 1 CONC emplary character and holding the rank of N.C. officer with 2 Good Condu 1 CONC ct badges, and last though not least viz three bright silver medals. 1 CONT The day following found me in lodgings in Camberwell and soon obtained a t 1 CONC emporary job as copying clerk at a law stationers office at Lincolns In 1 CONC n, during the sitting of the Law Courts. 1 CONT Next I am proud to relate I had a most kind friend - and at whose invitati 1 CONC on I left London and went straight to Silverdale. I should say that the d 1 CONC ay ' previous to this invite I had the offer in the Police Office as Writ 1 CONC er and so forth as the Inspector said I was not strong enough for street d 1 CONC uty. 1 CONT So far so good, thought I, but I had somehow or other decided otherwise a 1 CONC nd so I am now at sweet Silverdale. where I received the most kind treatme 1 CONC nt. Till by the influence of the Rev and Mrs Shepheard (since gone to the 1 CONC ir everlasting rest) I had the great pleasure to be accepted as Village Sc 1 CONC ripture Reader at Northumber near to Alnwick, a situation which I had so e 1 CONC agerly wished for was now opened out for me.My work was amongst collier 1 CONC s, Sunday School, House to House Visits, Cottage Meeting once a week a 1 CONC nd at this I remained for three and a half years when, to my regret, my ap 1 CONC pointment came to a close, but 'tis said; "Every cloud has a silver linin 1 CONC g" and that thought inspired me with new hopes, and soon I was on anoth 1 CONC er track - at Larne, Co. Antrim to assist with chartering vessels (schoone 1 CONC rs) for the shipment of Irish Iron Ore to other parts such as Barrow et 1 CONC c. and right dear is the memory of that little place, at that time a popul 1 CONC ation of about 800, but now a charming seaport town of about 8,000 and upw 1 CONC ards. 1 CONT And now yet another change after twelve months there: I find I am at Barr 1 CONC ow in Furness - in the Carriage Washing, next in charge of the Level Cross 1 CONC ing half way between Millurood Junction and Furness Abbey. All things co 1 CONC me to them that wait. This suited me well and expected a permanent stay he 1 CONC re was in store. But Oh! how we build castles in the air, for in twelve mo 1 CONC nths a new bridge over the Railway was begun and of course on its completi 1 CONC on the Level Crossing was no longer required, neither was I, and the Inspe 1 CONC ctor frankly, yet kindly, said he had so many porters and couldn't tell wh 1 CONC ere to put them, advised me some weeks in advance to look out for somethin 1 CONC g. 1 CONT In all fairness I must admit while at the Crossing - coming on duty 6 am o 1 CONC ne morning just in time only to see to my surprise a special Engine rush t 1 CONC hrough the 'up line' gate, which of course had to be reported, and which n 1 CONC ecessitated some repairs. 1 CONT And now I am to make the last move for the present in completing my sto 1 CONC ry inasmuch as I obtained a situation as Copying and Engrossing Clerk at t 1 CONC he Office of Messrs. Woodburn and Poole, Ulverston. While there I always f 1 CONC ound Mr Poole a most courteous and considerate gentleman and kindest Mast 1 CONC er I was ever with. And after remaining at the office for about four yea 1 CONC rs to my credit I may now draw to a conclusion the story of my variable wa 1 CONC nderings, wise and otherwise. The glories of military conquest! Does it n 1 CONC ot forceably remind us of Wolsey's estimation when he calls out "Vain po 1 CONC mp and glory of this world?" And now it comes to pass I seem to be for t 1 CONC he most part with few friends and as Shakespeare puts it "Every man wi 1 CONC ll be thy friend, when thou hast wherewithal to spend" and the following l 1 CONC ines may or may not aptly fit in here by the way - whoever is the author: 1 CONT 1 CONT "When War is imminent and danger nigh 1 CONT For God and the soldier is the Nation's cry: 1 CONT When war is over 1 CONT And all things righted 1 CONT God is forgotten 1 CONT And the soldier slighted" 1 CONT Still I must allow one word of special interest and it is that through t 1 CONC he kind influence of Capt. Hunt who laid my case to the notice of Her High 1 CONC ness, the then Duchess of York, now our present Queen Mary, that I was gra 1 CONC nted the pension of 5/- a week, and which later on was increased to 7/- a 1 CONC nd so I had the honour of addressing a suitable reply to that Lady of hi 1 CONC gh rank for once in a lifetime to express my most grateful thanks. The add 1 CONC ress was, To: Her Highness, The Duchess of York, York Cottage. 1 CONT 1 CONT "Thus far on the sands of time or along life's flowing river." 1 CONT And in closing this true yet imperfect, unassumed and simple manner the ac 1 CONC count of my journey through life thus far, I can acknowledge and recogni 1 CONC se through the vicissitudes through dangers seen and unseen a merciful a 1 CONC nd Divine protection. "In all Thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall dire 1 CONC ct they paths." As to the future I can only add with Tennyson "We know n 1 CONC ot anything; we can but trust that good at last may come to all, And eve 1 CONC ry winter changed to spring." 1 CONT -FINIS- 1 CONT 122 Brougham Street Burnley 1 CONT May 1913 0 @I06169@ INDI 1 NAME Joseph /Beckingham/ 1 SEX M 1 ALIA Joseph /Bacon/ 1 NAME Joseph /Bacon/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1790 2 PLAC West Hagbourne, Berks? 1 DEAT 2 DATE APR 1838 2 PLAC West Hagbourne, Berks 1 BURI 2 DATE 12 APR 1838 2 PLAC St Andrew, Hagbourne, Berks aged 48 2 SOUR @S005163@ 3 PAGE Hagbourne Burials aged 48 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Dennis Buckingham 2 DATE 1 DEC 2005 2 PLAC Pedigree 332R 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Dennis Buckingham 2 DATE 1 OCT 2005 2 PLAC Pedigree 332S 1 BAPM 2 DATE 31 OCT 1790 2 PLAC St Andrew, East Hagbourne, Berks - son of James & Martha Bacon 2 SOUR @S005163@ 3 PAGE Hagbourne 1 REFN J2398 1 FAMS @F06@ 1 FAMC @F27@ 0 @I06170@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /Gibbons/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1844 2 PLAC Littlemore, Oxford 2 SOUR @S002229@ 3 PAGE Dalton, Lancs RG10/4243/102/20 1 DEAT 2 DATE 8 MAR 1879 2 PLAC 3 Chapel Street, Ulverston 2 SOUR @S005298@ 3 PAGE & GRO Ulverston 8c 651 Mar 1879 aged 34 3 DATA 4 TEXT Lazarus remarries in 1881 in Ulverston Reg District. 2 CAUS Acute phyhias - certified by James J B Naylor 1 BAPM 2 DATE 23 AUG 1844 2 PLAC Littlemore, Oxford 2 SOUR @S005163@ 3 PAGE Littlemore, Oxford 1 CENS 2 DATE 1871 2 PLAC 26, with husband and son at Dalton, Lancs 2 SOUR @S002229@ 3 PAGE Dalton, Lancs RG10/4243/102/20 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Fact 2 DATE 10 MAR 1879 2 PLAC Death registered by husband, Lazarus - present at the death 1 REFN M2126 1 FAMS @F07@ 0 @I06172@ INDI 1 NAME Arthur Daniel /Beckingham/ 1 SEX M 1 ALIA Arthur Daniel /Beckenham/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT FEB 1870 2 PLAC Littlemore, Oxford 2 SOUR @S005163@ 3 PAGE Littlemore and see GRO Headington 3a 649 Mar 1870 as Beckenham 1 DEAT 2 DATE 31 MAR 1894 2 PLAC Market Place, Poulton, Lancs 2 SOUR @S005298@ 3 PAGE GRO Fylde 5c 423 Jun 1894 aged 24 & family info per Susan James 3 DATA 4 TEXT As BECKENHAM 1 BAPM 2 DATE 13 MAR 1870 2 PLAC Littlemore, Oxford 2 SOUR @S005163@ 3 PAGE Littlemore, Oxford 1 CENS 2 DATE 1871 2 PLAC Aged 1, as Beckenham, with parents at Furness Abbey, Dalton, Lancs 2 SOUR @S002229@ 3 PAGE Dalton, Lancs RG10/4243/102/20 1 CENS 2 DATE 1881 2 PLAC Aged 11, as Beckingham, at 7a Canal Head, Ulverston, Lancs, with father & step mum. 2 SOUR @S002231@ 3 PAGE Ulverston, Lancs.
